Frequently Asked Questions

Do lobelia flowers come back every year?

Perennial varieties of lobelia do come back each year. However, the common garden variety, Lobelia erinus, is most often grown as an annual and will not survive the winters in climates outside USDA gardening zones 10-11. The plants can drop seeds, however, which may sprout and grow the following spring.

How do you keep lobelia looking good?

Once established, the lobelia plant requires little maintenance. During hot, dry periods, care of lobelia requires that the plant should receive frequent watering, however, especially those in containers. A general-purpose liquid fertilizer can be given once a month or every four to six weeks, if desired.

Where does lobelia grow best?

It thrives in full sun or part shade in organically rich, evenly moist, well-drained soils. Grow in part shade where summer heat is intense. Appreciates regular fertilization throughout the growing season.

How tall does Lobelia erinus grow?

The edging lobelia is the shorter of the two main types.u003cbru003eIt rarely grows more than 6″ inches high while the trailing habit lobelia can produce leggy growth up to 12″ inches.u003cbru003eLobelia has thin leaves and delicate stems but may spread a couple of feet, making it great for edging borders.
